On Saturday October 5th, the PRA will be sponsoring a day long QRP Expedition to Signal Butte, in Teller County.
We plan to leave from the Parker United Methodist Church at 6:00am on October 5th and convoy to the National Forest, to an area just west and north of Divide CO (about a 1.9 hour drive.) From there we will drive 1-2 miles into the forest to the base of Signal Butte (all vehicles can drive on this forest road).
This peak has a short (about 30 minute) walking trail from a parking area to the top of the peak. The walk is somewhat strenuous, with some switchbacks and rocky sections, but for the most part, it is a well-defined trail and not a problem ascending. At the top there are dead trees for antenna setup and a somewhat sheltered operating area. We will need to bring a tarp for the operation position and possibly another 1 or 2 tarps for general shelter to protect from the sun or rain. The summit will hold as many as 15-20 people if needed.
We will plan to pack in all our gear, including antennas, radios, batteries, solar, etc,. Also please bring whatever food you want for lunch. There are no toilet facilities on the peak, but some sheltered areas along the path for portable toilet operations.
We will plan to leave the site around 4 PM and head to Rudy’s BBQ in Old Colorado City (west side of Colorado Springs). For those who want to eat the best BBQ in Colorado, please bring some funds and expect a 30-45 minute wait at Rudy’s.
Please bring spouses, guests or whoever. There is also general hiking available as well as overnight camping for those who may want to spend the night
